How to Split a PDF Online Free
Why split a PDF?
There are many practical reasons to split a PDF online. Large PDF files can be too big to email or upload to certain portals. Furthermore, you may only need a specific section of a large document — splitting lets you extract exactly the pages you need without sharing the entire file. As a result, splitting a PDF is one of the most commonly needed document operations.
In addition, splitting is useful when a combined PDF needs to be distributed to different recipients — for example, extracting each person's section from a combined report. Moreover, splitting large scanned documents into individual pages makes them easier to organise and archive.
You receive a 50-page combined document but only need pages 12–18. Instead of sharing the entire file, split the PDF to extract just those pages as a separate document — faster to share and more professional.
Three ways to split a PDF online
Our free PDF splitter offers three splitting modes to give you complete control over how your PDF is divided:
How to split a PDF online free — step by step
Our free PDF splitter works entirely in your browser. No uploads, no signup, complete privacy. Here is how to split a PDF online:
Open the PDF Splitter
Go to our free PDF splitter. It works on desktop and mobile without any software installation.
Upload your PDF
Drag and drop your PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. The tool loads the PDF and shows you the total page count instantly.
Choose your splitting mode
Select "All pages", "Page range", or "Select pages" depending on what you need. Each mode gives you different options for controlling exactly which pages to extract.
Set your page selection
For page range mode, enter your pages like "1-5, 8, 12-15". For select pages mode, click the page number buttons to highlight the pages you want. For all pages mode, no selection is needed.
Split and download
Click Split PDF. Each extracted PDF appears in the results with its own Download button. If you split into multiple files, use the Download All button to get all pages at once.
How to extract specific pages from a PDF
Extracting specific pages is the most common reason people need to split a PDF online. Here is the most effective approach for different scenarios:
Extracting a continuous range of pages
Use the Page Range mode and enter the range — for example, "5-12" to extract pages 5 through 12. This is the fastest way to extract a chapter, section, or any consecutive set of pages from a larger document.
Extracting non-consecutive pages
Use the Page Range mode with comma-separated entries — for example, "1, 5, 9, 15-18" to extract page 1, page 5, page 9, and pages 15 through 18. All selected pages are combined into a single extracted PDF in their original order.
Extracting a single page
To extract a single page, use Page Range mode and enter just that page number — for example, "7" to extract only page 7. Alternatively, use Select Pages mode and click just that one page number button.
When extracting pages from a large document, use the page range format "1-5, 10, 15-20" to combine specific pages and ranges in a single operation. This saves time compared to making multiple separate extractions. Furthermore, the extracted pages always appear in their original document order, regardless of the order you type them.
Privacy when splitting PDFs online
PDF files often contain sensitive information — contracts, financial statements, medical records, and personal data. As a result, the privacy of the splitting tool you use matters significantly.
Our PDF splitter processes all files entirely within your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded to our servers or any third-party server. Consequently, your sensitive documents remain completely private throughout the entire splitting process.
In contrast, many popular online PDF tools upload your files to cloud servers for processing. This means your confidential documents travel over the internet and are temporarily stored on servers you do not control. Therefore, for any sensitive documents, always choose a browser-based tool that processes files locally.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split a PDF into individual pages?
Yes — use the "Split all pages" mode to convert every page of your PDF into a separate single-page PDF file. A 20-page PDF will produce 20 individual PDF files. You can then download them all at once using the Download All button.
Does splitting a PDF reduce its quality?
No — splitting a PDF does not affect quality in any way. Each extracted page is an exact copy of the original page with no quality loss whatsoever. Text remains sharp, images retain their original quality, and all formatting is preserved perfectly.
Can I split a PDF on my phone?
Yes — our PDF splitter works on iPhone and Android mobile browsers. Open the tool in Safari or Chrome on your phone, upload your PDF, select your splitting mode, and download the results. Everything runs locally on your device with no internet upload required.
What is the maximum number of pages I can split?
There is no page limit. Our tool can handle PDFs of any size — the only constraint is your device's available memory. Very large PDFs with hundreds of pages may take a few seconds longer to load and process, but there is no hard limit on pages or file size.
